Bandwidth
Bandwidth is considered very presious by many webmasters. Why? Because it is generally bandwidth that'll make your site expensive. The more bandwidth your
site sucks up, the bigger bandwidth hosting you'll need. And the bigger your bandwidth, the more you end up paying. Most free hosts only have a limited
bandwidth availible for you before they either bombard your site with ads or close your website all together.
What is bandwidth?
Bandwidth is defined as the amount of data that can be transfered from a server to a computer at any given time. What this means if you have a high
bandwidth, a lot of data can be transfered from your host to your visitors. Data is measured in bytes. The more bandwidth your website has, the more content
you can have and the more visitors you can have without having bandwidth issues. If you run out of bandwidth, depending on your host, your site might be
stuffed with ads, taken offline for short periods of time or completely taken off. Some other things may also occur, that depends on your host. Bandwidth is
one of those things you have to have inorder to have a running website. Remember, the less bandwidth each page uses, the faster your pages load as
well. So even if you have a lot of bandwidth, try to use it sparingly. Neo-Reality has 600 GB a month and usually uses less than 8 GB.
Bandwidth traps
Often, you might not even know where are your bandwidth is going to. It just seems to creep away and suddenly your using up several Mega or even Gigabites of
valuble bandwidth. What to do? Remember, for most sites, the home page has cutenews on it. This means every single visitor will load this page. That means a
*lot* of bandwidth going away since cutenews uses a good bit. To prevent this, do not upload your images into cutenews -- use tinypic.com or something else
instead. Also, it is a good idea to delete older cutenews posts. No one reads them, usually, and it will not only save bandwidth, your page will also load a
lot faster. At Neo-Reality, we usually delete the posts so we always have exactly 10 news posts. Remember, if you offer cutenews hosting, your bandwidth will
be used on those sites.
Big image sizes will also suck away your bandwidth. Whenever possible, try to save your larger images as .gifs and not .pngs since they are a lot smaller.
Again, you also have the benifit of your page loading faster.
Keep all your images off your actual site host. Instead, use things like photobucket.com or tinypic. At Neo-Reality, we generally put all graphics on
photobucket and tutorial images on tinypic. Thats up to you though. If your useing photobucket, remember to keep an eye on your bandwidth for photobucket as
well. You can speard out your images over several photobucket accounts to prevent your bandwidth from becoming scarce.
Making due with Bandwidth
Consider that Neo-Reality, a rather large site, requires about 8 GB max a month, though we have never crossed over 8, as far as I am aware. That is with
hosting the cutenews of quite a number of other sites. I would estimate 5 GB maximum for a site with 100 to 200 daily visitors, if you use your bandwidth
wisely. Also, lets take a peek at where our bandwidth is going..
.gif images : 69.2% of bandwidth used
HTML documents : 10% of bandwidth used
.png images : 7% of bandwidth used
As you can see, a huge slate of your bandwidth used comes from your images. The .gif images by use are for the most part just the layout and makers. Almost all the other images are not on our server. Therefore, if you are having bandwidth problems, maybe consider putting your website layout images onto a different host. This needs to support a lot of monthly bandwidth, if possible. Try to space your images out. You might even need an account for each image just to be on the safe side. That shouldn't be needed though, unless your images re-load on every page (on an iframe layout this isn't the case) or you have a lot of visitors. Of course, you want to make sure that you keep your file size low. HTML documents are all the pages on your site with the exception of stylesheets, unless you run on PHP. Over 350 of Neo-Reality's pages are HTML documents. By reducing the number of images on your tutorials you are protecting your bandwidth. Also, you can make your images on links (make "click here" links that lead to your image). That way, the images are not loaded unless the visitor actually needs them.
Conclusion
Good luck! There are lots of ways of making due with little bandwidth. Neo-Reality actually managed with free hosting for over a year -- with over 400
visitors total. Remember, your bandwidth doesn't depend on the unique, but on the total visitor numbers.
