spell or Starve
Naming your Website Often, the process of finding a fitting name for your website is harder than you'd think. Many site owners rush around asking for suggestions, since they are unable to find a good name for their site. Here are some tips and tricks you can use while naming your site.
Short and Sweet
One of the most important rules to bare in mind while naming your website is to make it short and sweet. No one is going to remember "Organisation of crazy plushie lupe lovers foreva!". Try to keep it simple. No need to build in big words that no one knows anyways. Stick with easy words that are easy to spell -- you don't want to miss out on visitors just because people cannot remember how Encyclopedia is spelt. Or, at least make your name have a short acronym. That way, users will only have to remember that. An example would be NEO is an acronym for "Near Earth Object" or HOT for "house of toast".
To Neo or not to neo
Try to mirror your theme at least a little bit in your website name. Many websites (including Neo-Reality) choose to include "Neo" in their name. Why? It generally symbolizes that these sites are neopets-related. If your website is neopets related (strictly) you might want to consider adding the "neo" to your name to make this clear to your visitors. Sometimes, "neo" is considered to being un-original. It also limits you in some way since it will be hard turning your site celeb-only if your name has "neo" in it. Its up to you, but "neo" just makes it clear to the visitor that they are on a neopets-related website.
Hyphons and spaces
It toke us forever to decide: Neo-Reality, NeoReality, neoreality or Neo Reality. The problem with spaces in your website name is that you can't have a space in a URL. Often, visitors will write your name as it appears in the URL. Remember, people are lazy. Even if your site name has a hyphon in the URL, you always type your site name with the hyphon and your banners etc have the hyphon in it, a lot of people will forget it. It generally is easier on the eyes to have a space in your name or a hyphon if its a connection of multiple words. "House of Lupes" or "House-of-Lupes" is easier to read than "houseoflupes". If you want spaces in your name, you may end up having to put no spaces in the URL and just putting in the spaces on your website layout and so forth. Just see what works best for you.
Words
There are some words often used in website names: Color, love, luv, neo, heart, faerie etc. Try to aviod extremely commen words. Instead, try to be original while still using easy words. If you want a neopets related name, how about you just surf the site for a little? Look at all the words and try to go for anything that stands out. "The Brain Tree" might be an interesting name for a tutorial-based site. What I suggest you don't do is get too based on your site name if you plan to change your layout a lot. For example, if you name your site "Faerie Uni" then people expect a Faerie Uni website layout. This means your going to be stuck with the under 10 Faerie Uni images. Quickly, you'll get bored of these. If you name your site a specific name like that, either make sure you REALLY love the images there are, you can make your own, you don't want to change the layout very often or your just not going to follow the theme your name gives. Never put missspelt words in your site name -- "graphixz" looks like your too dumb to write the word or make a typo. Even if you think it'll look "cool" or "original", it may make others think that your a n00b.
Afterthoughts
Remember, a name change can be extremely difficult for a website, so its very important that you like your name, its easy to remember and catchy. Make sure you feel happy with it. Feel free to spend a week deciding your website name, you can always start preparing to open your website, even if you don't have a name yet (start writing guides and make the graphics & put the credit with the site name on them later). Try to aviod using a site namer -- chances are you'll end up with an unoriginal name since you won't be the only one using that namer.
